About the Laboratory of Cybernetic Environment

Director
Zihao Zhang
Cybernetic Environment is a landscape laboratory at the Spitzer School of Architecture of the City College of New York. Led by assistant professor Zihao Zhang, Ph.D., the lab innovates landscape strategies by investigating emerging cybernetic technologies, including sensing networks, robotics, machine learning, and AI, and their ramifications on the constructed environment. We do not simply apply these tools in landscape design and environmental management. We develop new theories and practices through prototyping and iterative and generative approaches. We invent new concepts, strategies, and technologies to address the most pressing issues, such as food insecurity, climate change, ecological crisis, and social injustice, and their compounding effects faced by future cities and urban landscapes.
